Upgraded COVID-19 Test kits Against SARS-CoV-2 Delta Variant

August 6, 2021

1.Background:

The SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant (B.1.617.2) has been detected in many countries. It has become predominant in the Indian state of Maharashtra and probably other Indian regions, and represented 77% of the sequenced viruses circulating in the UK between 2 June and 9 June 2021. It has been classified as a variant of concern (VOC) and is believed to be 60% more transmissible than the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7). Little is known about the sensitivity of the Delta variant to the humoral immune response. Recent reports have indicated that members of the B.1.617 lineage exhibit reduced sensitivity to certain monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies compared to the Alpha variant.

2.How contagious is the Delta variant?

Data indicate that Delta is 40-60% more transmissible than Alpha and almost twice as transmissible as the original Wuhan strain of SARS-CoV-2. Furthermore, significantly more viral particles have been found in the airways of patients infected with the Delta variant. A Chinese study reported that viral loads in Delta infections were ~1,000 times higher than those in infections caused by other variants. In response to this information, the World Health Organization (WHO) regards Delta as “the fastest and fittest” variant so far.

3.Test SARS-CoV-2 Delta Variant:

Information about the characteristics of these variants is rapidly emerging. Scientists are working to learn more about how easily they spread, whether they could cause more severe illness and whether currently authorized vaccines will protect people against them.

Testing for the Delta variant usually has to be done on a more precise level involving polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing platforms, which tend to be more accurate and sensitive to genetic variations within the coronavirus. But that level of testing also takes more time than a rapid response test which may return results within a half-hour but miss out on some of the biological details. Those faster diagnostics may be able to sense whether or not you’re generally infected with COVID, but not necessarily whether it’s the Delta strain specifically that’s afflicting you.

Therefore, NewScen coast biotech already going to work on creating rapid tests which can detect the Delta variant without requiring all the bells and whistles of an intensive PCR test. its own antigen test can detect the variant.
